CB Radio(1990)

I was introduced to CB Radio by my brother Pete, and thought this was the way to go. Work HF without a Ham License, this was just great

This was my entry into the world of HF Radio, a General Electric Superbase CB Rig, which had been modified to operate on 27,555Mhz

I used a Zetagi 100W Amplifier, and put out a really good signal on 27Mhz, a big improvement on the 12W out of the Rig

Icom IC728

SOLD

First HF Rig (1994)

The Icom IC728 was my first HF Rig, a big improvement over the GE Superbase CB Rig, which I was using on 27,555Mhz

This Rig worked really well, and was used on 27,555Mhz. It put out a really good signal into a home made 3 element monobander at 12 metres off the ground

I eventually let my late father Norm use the Rig, which was an improvement over his Yaesu FT101ZD

Icom IC738

SOLD

Second HF Rig (1995)

The Icom IC738 was my second HF Rig

From the start, I didn't like this rig ! It just didn't feel good, and gave lots of trouble. Had to be repaired under warranty, on a number of occasions

I eventually sold the Rig, and took a loss on the deal

Kenwood TS940S

SOLD

Third HF Rig (1997)

This was my first Kenwood, a TS940S, and what an improvement over the IC738. Was like night and day !

The Rig was modified with a new Eprom which enabled the memory channels to be tuned, and really made it a pleasure to use

All I can say is that this was an excellent Rig, was sold to make way for a TS870S

Kenwood TS930S

Forth HF Rig (1997)

This was my second Kenwood, a TS930S, and what a Rig, really good receiver and a good overall performer

Reluctantly, sold this rig, had too many rigs in the shack, hi !

Kenwood TS870S

Fifth HF Rig (2000)

Yaesu FT1000MP IV Field

SOLD

Seventh HF Rig (2004)

This was my first Yaesu, an FT1000MP MKV Field, this was a great Rig

This Rig was bought with funds received from selling a bunch of Tubes, so I hadn't had to dig into my pockets for this fine Rig

Sold this Rig to make way for another TS870S, and a 3 element SteppIR

Kenwood TS870S

SOLD

Eighth HF Rig (2005)

Got a good deal on this Rig, another TS870S, got it from a friend (ZS6BG) and was only 3 months old

Ninth HF Rig (2005)

Got a good deal on this Rig, got it from a friend in the States (K4WPX Andre - ex ZS6WPX)

As you can see, I have an Icom back in the Shack

This is a great DX Rig, which I really enjoy using, and the Band Scope and Duel Watch are great operating aids

SDR-1000

NOT FOR SALE

Tenth HF Rig (2006)

Latest HF Rig, is the SDR-1000 from Flex Radio Systems, and the first one in South Africa !

This is a Software Defined Radio, which implies that most of the functionality is derived from Software, and not the usual Hardware, as is the case in regular Radio's

This is a fun experience, and the SDR may well be the future of radio as we know it !

I'm running the SDR with a Pentium 4 CPU, and 1 Gig of Ram

Yaesu FT101ZD

NOT FOR SALE

Eleventh HF Rig (2007)

This old Rig is back in my shack, its the Yaesu FT101ZD MKIII, which was bought new in 1981 by my late father Norm (ZS6AVM)

The rig is in very good cosmetic and working condition. I have the external VFO, as well as the external speaker. Also have spare driver and final tubes

I use an Astatic pre-amplified mic which is an improvement on the original mic
